Edwards Wins Sportsman Opener On Late Restart

The Callaway Investments Sportsman Series began their 18th season of racing on Wednesday night, with a 100-lap Street Stock feature event at the New Smyrna Speedway.

Race Winner – Trevor Edwards used a final restart with two laps to go to work the outside lane into Victory Lane behind the wheel of his No. 32. Edwards was only at the point for two laps, but that is all it took. The victory was the 15th of his SARA career.

Race Summary – After three heat races and the pole shuffle set the field for the season-opener, Kyle Souza would bring the field to the green flag from the pole position. Souza would lead the first 25 laps before Ty Spearman took the advantage with a run to the bottom lane. Following a flurry of second-half cautions, Spearman restarted on the point on lap 98, but wasn’t able to hold off a charging Edwards over the final few laps. Spearman led 73 laps, but had to settle for second.

Heat Winners – With 27 cars in the pit area, three qualifying races scheduled for 12 laps each would take place. Russell Charneski won heat 1, while Ty Spearman was able to take the checkered flag in the second heat. Adam Benefiel would grab the victory in the third heat race.

Hard Charger – Race winner Trevor Edwards started 22nd and worked his way to the front of the pack to take down the victory.

Sportsman Rookie – Russell Charneski was the top Rookie of the race, finishing fifth after starting third on the field and also winning his heat race.

Title Fight – With his victory in the New Smyrna 100, Trevor Edwards leads the championship standings following the first week of action by two points over Ty Spearman. Tim Bills is third heading for week two.

Up Next – The Callaway Investments Sportsman Series will head to Langley Speedway next Wednesday night for a 100-lap night race at Langley Speedway.
