This past Thursday night, The Button Box Shop Super Series made their first ever trip to The Bullring at LVMS in the Area52 Designs 152. Tim Bills set down the fastest lap for the first track record with a lap of 13.725 seconds. Due to an iRacing glitch, there would be no invert at the front of the field and Bills would lead the field to the green flag.
As the race got underway, Bills looked strong early on, maintaining a few car-length lead over Derek Holzhausen and Richie Davidowitz. After the first yellow flag, Bills was able to extend that gap even further as the field set out on a 100+ lap run. By lap 50, Joe Schaffer Jr. was on the move as he took over 2nd and began to put the pressure on for the lead, but after some time it was Matt Rolfe who took his turn challenging for the lead as well.
As the field began working their way through lapped traffic on lap 90, Rolfe took his shot by making a move under Bills as they worked under lapped traffic and came around to take over the lead. Rolfe extended the gap out to 2.5 seconds before the caution flew once more on lap 129.
On one final restart, Rolfe got the jump back out front and was able to pull away during the final laps while Robinson and Matt Kocher battled it out behind him. Rolfe would eventually come around to pick up the checkered flag, picking up his first career Super Series victory, and his 23rd career SARA win.
At the end of the night, the division’s second drop race was factored into the standings, and it couldn’t have tightened up the points any more. Matt Kocher benefitted the most and takes over the points lead by just 1 point over Matt Rolfe, with Derek Robinson just 4 back, and Davidowtiz falls down to 12 points back. Next week the series heads to the Martinsville paperclip for 125 laps.
