Drake Triumphs in Independence Day Showdown

On Tuesday night, the Sprint Series returned to Volusia Speedway Park for a 35-lap feature event for the Independence Day Showdown. While the car count was lower than normal due to the Fourth of July celebrations, there were still some fireworks on the track.

Race Winner – During a 17-lap green flag run that extended through the halfway point of the race, Ray Farlow led the field after starting on the pole, but Kenneth Drake was charging and closing the gap. Then the yellow flag flew on lap 21, which gave Drake the shot he needed as he overtook Farlow for the lead just after the restart, and went on to lead the remainder of the race. A restart with 3 laps to go gave the field one last chance, and despite a small mistake, Drake was able to hold on to win 3rd race of the season, and his second at Volusia after scoring wins in both races at the track so far this season.

Heat Winners – AJ Bower and Dante Curtis both picked up Heat Race victories.

Hard Charger – David Krikorian started from the back row of the field, and made his way up to contend for a podium finish before settling with a 4th place run.

Title Fight – Kenneth Drake’s victory helped him extend his points lead up to 9 points over David Krikorian, but the points may be shaken up at the end of the week when drop races are factored into the standings.

Up Next – Next week the series is taking the week off as far as regular points racing, but the 360 WINGED Sprint Cars will be back in action for Race #2 of their Triple Crown series at Williams Grove.
