Week 3 of the season got under way on Monday night as the 360 Non-Wing Sprint Cars returned in the DonutsDesigns.com Open Wheel Series for a 40-lap feature event at Volusia.
Race Winner – A restart with 10 laps to go allowed Dillon Raffurty to make up some ground on Dave Bodio, and he used the high side to carry his momentum into the lead and to the victory, for his 3rd career SARA win in 3 total starts.
Race Summary – Matt Rolfe led the field to the green flag and led the opening lap before Dave Bodio took it away. Bodio made one small mistake that allowed Dante Curtis to get by for a few laps, but took the lead back on lap 11 and from there Bodio looked to be on his way to a win. However a caution with 13 laps to go bunched the field back up, and set up a restart with 11 to go. Bodio had been running the inside lane, but after the restart the groove seemed to go away, allowing Dillon Raffurty to use the outside lane to carry the momentum, and Raffurty would get by to lead lap 31 and went on to lead the final 10 laps on his way to victory. Bodio hung onto 2nd, while Jared Turnbull, David Krikorian, and Curtis rounded out the top five.
Heat Winners – Derek Robinson ran away to win Heat Race #1, while an exciting three-way battle took place in Heat Race #2 that saw Dave Bodio take the win.
Hard Charger – Jared Turnbull started outside the top ten in 12th, and ended the night on the podium gaining 9 spots on the night..
360 Non-Wing Sprint Title Fight – With a runner-up finish, Dave Bodio maintains his points lead by 14 points over Jared Turnbull.
Combined Points Title Fight – Kenneth Drake had a late incident that dropped him to a 7th place finish, but it was enough for him to hold onto the overall points lead by 14 points over Bodio and Derek Robinson.
Up Next – Next week the Open Wheel Series will switch back over to the UMP Modifieds for Week 4 with a 60-lap feature at Lanier which will be the league’s first visit to the new configuration.
