This past Wednesday night, the Callaway Investments Sportsman Series finished up their 2018 Spring Season with a 125-lap feature event at Lanier to crown a new champion.

Title Fight – Entering the night, Joe Schaffer Jr. led the standings and needed to finish just 7th or better to clinch the title, and he did that and more with the victory. The win would secure Schaffer’s third Sportsman Series title, with a championship season that consisted of 4 wins, 6 top fives and top tens, and 387 laps led in 8 races. Congrats to Joe Schaffer on the championship!

Race Winner – Schaffer took the lead on lap 13, and held onto it for the rest of the night as he went on to pick up his 42nd career SARA win.

Race Summary – To start the race, Matt Rolfe led the opening laps after starting on the outside of Russell Berry at the green. Rolfe would jump out front but it didn’t take long for Schaffer to work his way up to 2nd, and put the pressure on in the opening laps. Schaffer worked his way under Rolfe to take the lead by lap 13. After the race’s only restart on lap 39, Tim Bills was able to hang within a couple of car lengths of the leader, but as the race went green to the finish, Schaffer would pull away out front to pick up his 4th win of the season.

Heat Winners – Joe Schaffer and Darrell Hamlin took the victories in their respective Heat Races.

Hard Charger – Scott Trantham started 11th on the night and climbed up 4 positions to finish in 7th.

Sportsman Rookie – Russell Charneski ended his rookie season with a 4th place finish which was enough to earn him Rookie of the Season honors over Donald Clark.
