The Callaway Investments Sportsman Series returned to the Irwindale Speedway on Wednesday night for the second race this season at the track. Last time the Sportsman Street Stocks took on the Inner configuration, but this time it was the Outer layout for 100 laps.

Race Winner – Kyle Souza got out front early and ran away out front in the caution and incident-free race, and he would take the win making it a sweep of the two Irwindale events on the season.

Race Summary – At the drop of the green flag, Matt Rolfe used the high side to come out with the lead on lap one. But early on, Kyle Souza was putting down some quick laps and caught Rolfe for the lead. The two battled back and forth for 20 laps before Souza eventually gained the advantage by lap 33. While Souza pulled away out front, Rolfe was falling back into the grasp of Joe Schaffer Jr. and those two would also battle intensely. It took Schaffer over 30 laps to clear Rolfe, but that had allowed Souza to run and hide out front. Souza would go on to take the victory, his 4th career SARA win.

Heat Winners – Both Heat Races ended nearly in a dead heat, as Ian Layne nosed ahead of Schaffer to win Heat 1, while Souza edged out Clay Snider at the line in Heat 2.

Hard Charger – Darrell Hamlin gained four spots on the night climbing from 10th to 6th.

Sportsman Rookie – Russell Charneski finished 7th on the night as the highest rookie and unofficially clinches the Rookie of the Season honors.

Title Fight – Joe Schaffer Jr. entered the night just 3 points ahead of Ty Spearman in the points, but Spearman dropped out early leaving Schaffer with a 19 point lead over Tim Bills. Schaffer can clinch the title next week with a finish of 7th or better.

Up Next – The Callaway Investments Sportsman Series will join the rest of the SARA divisions at Lanier next week as the 2018 Spring Season wraps up with a 125-lap feature.
